A shiny Pokémon has different colours from the rest of its species. Since version 1.7.0, some shinies are Chroma Shinies: an even rarer variant, with its own colours and 31 IVs in every stat.

Improving your odds
Three things improve the odds of meeting a wild shiny, and they stack:
The chain: every encounter with a non-shiny Pokémon raises that species’ chain by one. Step encounters, fishing, Headbutt, Titans and event battles count; gifts, eggs, trades, the Lottery and trainers do not. A visible Pokémon only counts if you battle it. Each species has its own chain (all forms together), which resets when you find a shiny of that species.
The Shiny Charm: it gives three rolls instead of one, about three times the odds.
The Pokégear’s “Shiny Chain” app shows, for each tracked species, your encounters, your shinies, your chain and your current odds.

Other ways to get a shiny
Day Care eggs: 1/4096, or about 1/1366 with the Shiny Charm.
Gifts, in-game trades, starters and gifted eggs: 1/4096, with no bonus.
Shiny Ball: a Pokémon caught with it always becomes shiny. You find one during the adventure, and some gift codes give another.
Miracle Lottery: every Pokémon won has a 1 in 30 chance of being shiny.
Always-shiny Pokémon: a few Pokémon are guaranteed shiny (list below), and some gift codes give one too.
Chroma Shiny
Every shiny has a 1 in 30 chance of being a Chroma, or 1 in 15 if you already own a shiny of the same species, all forms together, in your party, the Pouch, the PC or the Day Care.
A Chroma has 31 IVs in all six stats, permanently.
Titans, Pokémon hatched from eggs (Day Care eggs included) and trainers’ shinies can be Chroma. Always-shiny Pokémon also go through this roll.
A Chroma sells for more: about 1.4 times the price of a shiny with perfect IVs, and nearly twice that of a shiny with ordinary IVs.
The “super shinies” of saves made before 1.7.0 become Chromas when the game loads. Other Pokémon from those saves never become Chroma.
Spotting a shiny
On the map: a visible shiny has a golden glow; a Chroma, a slowly turning rainbow glow. It stays visible even with the “All hidden” option.
In battle: a shiny’s name is shown in turquoise, a Chroma’s in pastel colours, one per letter. The info screen shows “★ Chroma Shiny”.
Always-shiny Pokémon
These Pokémon are always shiny, and can also be Chroma (1/30, or 1/15).
